Workshops are hands-on experiences where attendees have the opportunity to play with paints in a variety of techniques and take home their projects!  These can be set up through art stores, art associations or small groups and can be booked by anyone, anywhere nationally and internationally!  If you are interested in setting something up, please contact me at amyshawley@gmail.com.  I look forward to working with you!

Design Your Own Group Workshop!

Description: This workshop option is availabile so that you and your friends can custom design your own workshop experience!  Want to take a class but don't see it on the calendar?  See a workshop but it's not on a day that works for you?  Let me know what you want to learn and I will put project together to suit your creative needs!  If you need ideas, I am happy to send a list of techniques - experiment with a little bit of everything or keep it simple and focused!  From fine art to mixed media to a relaxed wine and art night, let's paint together!  I provide paint and materials for small or practice projects, students will need to provide materials for larger or finished works.

Fees: At my studio - $65/person/day with a minimum of 3 students, max 6-8 depending on the style of workshop.  Multi-day workshops can also be booked, fee is daily rate x amount of days.  If students are providing the venue, the workshop rate stays the same but the group will be responsible for my travel costs (including round-trip mileage, driving time @ $15/hr and overnight stays where applicable), contact me for more details!  

Time: 5hr* format with flexibility of Weekend/Weekday in either morning/afternoon/evening.  *If you want a different workshop format (longer, shorter, multi-day), please contact amyshawley@gmail.com for pricing!

Amazing Acrylic Layers - Two day workshop 

Saturday/Sunday May 20 & 21

Location: Floyd Center for the Arts, Floyd VA

Description: Discover the wonders of layering acrylic color and mediums during this two-day workshop!  Students will work with a range of color applications including stains, glazes, and blends, as well as use gels and mediums that will produce stunning transparent and translucent effects.  See how both regular and iridescent pigments can be combined to create fabulous surfaces and learn how to push and pull color in your layers by altering their behavior and sheen.   Students will also learn how to make textures and use image transfers between layers to really make their paintings unique!

All supplies needed for this workshop, including Golden paints/mediums, tools, and surfaces, will be supplied by the instructor. After the workshop, students will receive a pdf version of the workshop as a resource for future projects. Oil Painting Essentials

Sunday May 28

Location: My Studio, Scottsville VA

Description: Learn the fundamentals of oil painting in this hands-on workshop!  Oil paint is a beautiful, complex, and sometimes misunderstood medium - this workshop will demystify the oil painting process and enrich your understanding of what to paint on, how the colors dry, what mediums to use (if any), how to layer, and tips on varnishing.  If you are a beginner oil painter, someone who is revisiting oils after a long absence, or have always wanted to try them but weren't sure where to start - this will be a great event for you!  This workshop will also be taught entirely solvent-free, so if you have sensitivity to spirits, turpentine, or other painting solvents, not to worry - none will be present!

All workshop-use paints, tools, and surfaces will be provided by the instructor.  Students must bring: reference images (landscapes, wildlife, florals, figures, etc), paint clothes, a large box or trash bag to lay in your car/carry your projects, and supplies to take notes.

Luscious Layers with Gels & Pastes

Description: Discover the excitement of building rich layers with acrylic color, gels, and pastes!!  Students will develop a small series of images using a variety of acrylic mediums, colors, and a few dry media elements.   

All workshop-use paints, tools, and surfaces will be provided by the instructor.  Students must bring: reference images (landscapes, florals, figures, etc), paint clothes, a large box or trash bag to lay in your car/carry your projects, and supplies to take notes.

Drawing & Painting Maggie the Peregrine Falcon

Saturday June 10

Location: Wildlife Center of Virginia, Waynesboro VA

Description: Come join us for a special painting workshop featuring Maggie the Peregrine Falcon as our model!   The workshop will begin with a short presentation from Wildlife Center staff on Maggie and her role as an education animal, then students will work with artist Amy Shawley to discover the basics of watercolor and illustration as well as learn fun and easy ideas for painting birds.  We will have three 20 minute sessions with Maggie present to draw and paint her from life and we will also provide photographs of her to use during the remainder of our painting time.  

After a short snack/lunch break, workshop attendees will be given a tour of the wildlife center.  The workshop is open to only to adults 18 and over (no children) with all levels of art experience and all workshop-use materials including paints, pencils, palettes, brushes, and surfaces will be provided!  Please bring a sack lunch/snacks (if desired), a camera if you wish to take photos, and note-taking supplies.  Please wear clothes you don't mind getting paint on or bring an apron.   Email the instructor if you have any questions: amyshawley@gmail.com

Mixed Media Monoprints

Sunday June 25

Location: My Studio, Scottsville VA

Description: Students will make a series of printed images using acrylic colors on gelli plates, then enhance and layer the images with acrylic color and mediums, dry media (pencils/pastels), and watercolor!

All workshop-use paints, tools, and surfaces will be provided by the instructor.  Students must bring: reference images (landscapes, wildlife, florals, figures, etc), paint clothes, a large box or trash bag to lay in your car/carry your projects, and supplies to take notes.

Description: Explore how to work with a range of acrylic color and mediums to paint a series of abstract landscapes!  We will work with watermedia effects, knife painting, printmaking, and texture techniques along with a fun selection of tools and develop several surfaces during class!

Collage Techniques with Acrylic Skins

Description: Learn how to make sheets of acrylic called "skins" that can be use for fun collage elements in your work, then develop several collage surfaces by layering "skins", acrylic color and mediums!

Acrylic Texture Techniques

Location: Plaza Art Supply, Rockville MD

Description: Explore how to create unique surface textures with acrylic color and mediums!   Students will learn how to combine gels and pastes with color and imagery to enliven the topography of their paintings!  Be inspired by the possibilities as we work build both abstract surfaces and ones that simulate realistic textures.
