Workshops are hands-on experiences where attendees have the opportunity to play with paints in a variety of techniques and take home their projects!  These can be set up through art stores, art associations or small groups and can be booked by anyone, anywhere nationally and internationally!  If you are interested in setting something up, please contact me at amyshawley@gmail.com.  I look forward to working with you!

Exploring Color!

Friday July 12, 2019

Location: Amy's Studio* in Troy, VA

Description: Come spend the day at my studio learning all about pigment properties and color mixing!  This workshop is open to painters in acrylic, oil, and/or watercolor!  We will make color charts and sample paintings, giving students a chance to try out new colors and recipes.  If you've ever wanted to do a deep dive into pigments and their characteristics, this is the workshop for you!  All paints and workshop-use materials/tools/surfaces will be provided.

Fee: $65

Drawing and Painting Alex the Eastern Screech Owl

Saturday August 3, 2019

Location: Wildlife Center of VA, Waynesboro VA

Description: Come join us for a special painting workshop featuring Alex the Eastern Screech Owl as our model!   The workshop will begin with a short presentation from Wildlife Center staff on Alex and her role as an education animal, then students will work with artist Amy Shawley Paquette to discover the basics of watercolor and illustration as well as learn fun and easy ideas for painting birds.  We will have three 20 minute sessions with Alex present to draw and paint her from life and we will also provide photographs of her to use during the remainder of our painting time.  

After a short snack/lunch break, workshop attendees will be given a brief tour of the wildlife center.

The workshop is open only to adults 18 and over (no children) with all levels of art experience and all workshop-use materials including paints, pencils, palettes, brushes, and surfaces will be provided!   Please bring a sack lunch/snacks (if desired), a camera if you wish to take photos, and note-taking supplies.  Please wear clothes you don't mind getting paint on or bring an apron.

Fee: $68 (with 50% of profits going straight to the Wildlife Center!)

Time: 12:00-4:30pm

Acrylic Texture Techniques

Tuesday August 13, 2019

Location: The Studio School, Roanoke VA

Description: Discover the exciting process of making unique textures from acrylic paints! This hands-on workshop will introduce students to a range of acrylic products and painting tools that can be manipulated to add a fun dimensional quality to their creative projects! Using GOLDEN grounds, gels, and pastes we will build several small paintings with a variety of texture techniques then explore the color applications that are best suited for each surface (smooth, absorbent, and gritty).

GOLDEN acrylic color & mediums, along with brushes/tools,substrates, and other misc materials (water cups, paper towels, etc) will be provided by the instructor! It is advised that students wear "paint clothes" or bring an apron. Please also bring reference images that inspire you (landscapes, animals, florals, etc), supplies to take notes, and a large piece of cardboard or a trash bag to lay down in your car for transporting works home (some projects may still be tacky when you leave).

Lush Landscapes

Location: Amy's Studio* in Troy, VA

Description: Come spend the day at my studio and fall in love with landscape painting!  Students will learn the basics of composition and color, how to loosen and tighten up their brushwork, and how to add drama to landscapes.  This workshop is open to painters in acrylic and/or oil!  All paints and workshop-use materials/tools/surfaces will be provided.  Students are encouraged to bring photos of landscapes, but please let me know if you will need me to provide those for you.

Fee: $65

Birds of a Feather

Description: Let's gear up for Fall migration by learning how to paint birds!  Along with general tips and techniques on drawing and painting birds, we will also discuss "birdwatching 101" for those that want to know more about how and when to find birds in your area!  This workshop is open to painters in acrylic, watercolor, and/or oil!  All paints and workshop-use materials/tools/surfaces will be provided.  Students are encouraged to bring photos of your favorite birds, but I'm happy to provide a selection from my own photographs.

Intro to Acrylic Gels & Mediums

Sunday July 28, 2019

Location: Plaza Artist Materials, Rockville MD

Description: Acrylic mediums, gels, and pastes provide artists with countless creative options for how to alter and enhance their acrylic color! Gels and mediums can be used to extend pigments, create varying thicknesses of texture, change surface sheen, achieve glazes (and more!), while pastes can provide both wonderful texture and act as a ground layer for both wet and dry media. Come explore these materials to broaden your understanding of how they can be incorporated into your work! This hands-on workshop will focus on idea-building and each student will make a series of sample boards to take home and use as a reference in their own painting projects.

All workshop-use GOLDEN paints/mediums, brushes/tools, painting surfaces, and other misc supplies needed for class will be provided by the Instructor. Students are asked to bring reference images that inspire them (ie florals, landscapes, animals, abstracts), an apron/smock or wear "paint clothes", supplies to take notes, and a large piece of cardboard or a trash bag to lay down in your car (in case any of our surfaces are still tacky at the end of the day).

Transfer, Print & Draw!

Description: Explore a range of techniques for getting imagery into your acrylic paintings during this hands-on workshop! Students will get to make image transfers, monoprints, and learn some options for drawing on acrylic surfaces. We will work with GOLDEN acrylic color, grounds, and mediums along with graphite, soft pastels, stencils, masks and more!

All workshop-use GOLDEN paints/mediums, brushes/tools, painting surfaces, and other misc supplies needed for class will be provided by the Instructor. Acrylics A to Z: Color, Textures and Layers

Friday Aug 23- Sun Aug 25, 2019

Location: Donna Downey Studios, Lincolnton NC

Description: During this three-day painting intensive, students will have fun exploring the breadth of acrylic color and mediums made by Golden Artist Colors! On day one, students will learn about color properties, pigment behavior, and color mixing recipes while working with a range of paint formulations including Heavybody, Fluid, High Flow, and OPEN Acrylics! Day two will have us working with pastes and gels to achieve unique textures. Discover toothy and absorbent materials to use for painting grounds, see how to change the feel and viscosity of acrylic color by mixing texture recipes, and dabble with other techniques like wet carving and mold making. For our final day, we will combine techniques and elements from day one and two along with transparent and translucent mediums to create stunning layers! Students of all painting levels are welcome and all workshop-use paint, surfaces, and tools will be supplies by the instructor.
